Dear Neighbors,
One year ago, I decided to run for the Minnesota House of Representatives representing the community where I have lived for over 50 years. Having grown up in Bloomington, attended its public schools, and raised a family here, I love our quality of life and opportunity. But I questioned what we are leaving for our children. Will they have the prosperity and opportunity left to us by our parents? I was troubled by the lack of common sense, discipline, responsiveness, or courage coming out of the capitol, and an inability of our elected officials to work together on the most pressing issues affecting our lives and the lives of our children. I concluded that our state clearly needs less career politics and more real life experience.
After months listening to our neighbors at their doors, I am encouraged and excited to serve. Overwhelmingly they are asking for common sense from their elected public servants. We all care deeply about education, providing for those unable to care for themselves, and security. We recognize that common sense demands responsible, disciplined government. Double digit government growth is irresponsible, unsustainable, and will lead to bankruptcy. Compassion exists in responsibly keeping promises, not in irresponsibly making promises.
Voters need to know where candidates differ. I am thankful to my opponent that this campaign has been free of personal and unhelpful attacks, but we do clearly differ in our approach to what constitutes responsible government, and how much government should be intruding upon our lives. If elected, I will listen because it is your government. I will perform the job you will have elected me to do, not use that time to get elected for another term. Most importantly, I will be a faithful steward of your trust.
